Outstanding Addition to Arcade
Wed Mar 25 2020 jeff25624

Generally speaking, I think Apple Arcade provides consumers with high quality titles that don’t have the distractions that come with the games in the regular App Store. The freedom for developers to be creative really comes to the forefront...and there is no better example than Spyder. In terms of the look, story, and general gameplay, this is a standout title. They hooked me from the get go with their unique take on the 60’s spy genre, and goofy yet entertaining premise. I find myself having hard time stopping after each level, because I just want to keep going and explore the worlds that the developers have created. It has an aesthetic that reminds me of Archer’s spy world...minus the phrasing of course. I would recommend playing these game with a controller: I can’t say that I have tried it without one, but the controller seems by leaps and bounds to be the best mechanism to use with Spyder. If I would offer a small critique, there are moments when it is difficult to determine directionality with the camera: perhaps if it automatically adjusted to the direction Spyder is facing in? But that does not limit my enjoyment of the game, it’s really been a blast! Well done!

Great game but finished too quickly
Mon May 11 2020 Zayn20199

Let me start by saying that this is one of the best games of the Apple Arcade. This should be on the top 5 best games of Arcade. I finished the game in one sitting, in under 6 hours. Love the graphics, music and gameplay. The only issue for me is there’s too few missions, the missions are too short and the game finished too quickly. I wasn’t satisfied enough. I hope you guys are working on an update which adds more missions and more content to the game. I’d also love to see some side missions. It’s really boring that other than the main missions there’s nothing left to do in the game. We’re paying a monthly subscription to this service and so it’s not worth it when we finish a game in just one day. I see that the developer have replied that they have forwarded the review, issues and ideas to the team but are you guys seriously taking these reviews into consideration? If so please let us know if you’re working on an update to add more content to the game or why there hasn’t been an update with more content. We neee more content that would keep us coming back to the game every day. I’m sure you wouldn’t expect us to just uninstall the game after we’ve finished it. It’s like that now, what else is there for us to do other than remove it when we’ve finished? Please let us know WHEN YOU WOULD ADD MORE LEVELS!!! My rating would’ve been easily 5 stars if there’d been more missions and more content.

Solid game with a great concept! Controls need work.

Just beat level 3, and I must say I’m enjoying the game so far. The style of the levels and different ways of interacting with what’s around you are really fun. All of agent 8’s gadgets interact with things very similarly but you still have to figure out what/where to use them, which keeps the games interesting. One major problem I have unfortunately is the controls. I keep trying to pan the camera left/right/up/down with my right hand as I’m walking with my left hand, but it doesn’t work that way. Camera panning requires agent 8 to be stopped and two fingers to pan and that works the opposite of how my brain tells me it should, which leaves me with a bit of a headache. If the controls allowed me to walk agent 8 with one hand while I controlled the pan of the camera with the other, this game would be in my top 3 games on Apple Arcade. Still, very solid game!

Fantastic Graphics and Storyline, Controls Aren’t Extremely Intuitive
Sun Mar 22 2020 montvious

I got this game last night and have already finished it. It’s a fantastically developed game and has a great storyline and fantastic graphics, I thoroughly enjoyed playing it! However, I do wish there was a two-thumb control system where the left thumb controls movement (as it already does) and the right thumb controls the viewpoint. The two finger swipe is somewhat inconvenient and uncomfortable. One other issue is the strange and unpredictable behavior of the viewpoint when it automatically adjusts based on the position, coupled with the fact that the movement controls are generally based around the viewpoint, which sometimes causes very unpredictable controls, required precision, and sometimes multiple attempts to navigate to the same place. Otherwise, I have no other gripes about the controls. If I was considering getting Apple Arcade, this would definitely be one of the deciding factors. Once again, a fantastic game—congratulations to the developers and hopefully it will be expanded (and the controls improved)!

This is literally awesome

This is probably one of the most interesting and fun games I’ve ever played on mobile, the whole concept of being a robotic spider used for spying is literally perfects, it’s super interesting and honestly a pretty decent game in general, and I haven’t really ran into any glitches at all, nor the game crashing! Which is awesome! This is honestly a great game to play if you’re really bored, although, it should have some more levels, playing the same levels over and over again eventually get boring, a suggestion I have for a level would be for example, on a cruise ship, a cool thing you guys could add as a detail for spider is webs! It could be there from the tutorial level if you do end up adding it, or it could be introduced in a specific level and you get it for all the levels after that! I think that would be awesome, it’s a lot to ask for I know, I just think it would be nice if there were more levels and a new ability! Overall this game is awsome!!

Fun and intriguing but needs some changes
Sun Mar 22 2020 The 1ns0mniac

Overall the premise, sound design, graphics and layout of the levels are well done. I do agree with many others that the game could really use some polishing with the camera and controls. Having to use two fingers to turn the camera is spotty and really takes you out of the experience when you have to stop everything to rotate it. The angle of the camera is also problematic in many areas and can cause you to accidentally be on a conveyer belt, in the line of harmful blasts of air or in other danger areas as it’s just a hard angle to see clearly from. I’m all up for a challenge, just not challenging because you are fighting the camera and controls. Asking for precision with far from precise tools to work with. The interactive controls are also really spotty. I’ll have the on screen prompt for a grapple or laser but it’s not responding or I have to get in the perfect spot to trigger. If the camera was smoother (maybe pull out just a bit more and be more fluid), add in a right thumb zone to control the camera and a singular action button for controlling everything it would be a much better experience.

Another hit for Apple Arcade!

We are at a point where the line between what you would find on a game console and a mobile device is starting to blur, and Spyder is proof of that. A proper physics engine, graphics that approach the same visual fidelity you would find in a PS3 or Xbox 360 title, astounding attention to detail in each environment, impressive audio design (engines and computers sound accurate to their real-life counterparts, which is great for immersion), and varied gameplay that constantly switches things up without becoming too complicated or frustrating. It reminds me of when Mom would take me to the video store when I was a kid, and I would get to pick out one game to play for the weekend. One that I’d never heard of before, but took a chance on because the box art looked cool, and then it turned out to be an amazing gem. Spyder rekindles those same feelings within me, and brings a teary-eyed smile to my face because of its willingness to take a simple concept, and just have fun with it. It feels like the game developers are actually trying to impress me with new ideas, instead of recycling tired mechanics and basic gameplay loops, like most mobile games rely on. Don’t miss out on this one. It is really rare to see games like these; especially in today’s gaming climate. Just a simple, pure platformer with lots of little surprises, and a joyous sense of adventure.

A really great game, with clunky controls
Sat Mar 28 2020 SCRABBLATATE

I am one second level at the moment, and I already love the game. It is very charming and it fulfills a weird desire of spy robots I had as a kid. I love the scenery and how everything just fits together. One problem is the clunky controls. I believe the camera should be behind the robot as we traverse through, like from the perspective of the robot. Sometimes when I would ‘press’ forward, depending at what angle I am at, that could mean a different thing. For me at least, having the camera behind the Spyder would make the controls a lot more smooth. It could even just be a setting, I am unsure if others like the open camera angles. Sorry if any mistakes were in this review, I just really like the game, and think the controls really hinder it from greatness.

Controls ruined it
Sun Mar 22 2020 Codyn17

This games seemed fun And I thought it would be fun Except the developers had to go and ruin it with the horrible controls. First off the two fingers to move the camera thing. It’s uncomfortable (especially on a phone) and makes whichever fingers your using sore after a while. Why not just be able to use your thumb to move the camera? It’s unnecessary and inefficient. The idea is really good. But the execution was very poor ( because of the controls) and i’m pretty sure many people would agree with me. The graphics look really nice and 3D. I would come back to this app only if the controls were to change. Thank you! Edit: I’m also very happy that the devs are open to suggestions. This shows they will continue to fix the app and make it better. Within hours you will have replies on your App Store review. I won’t abandon this app because of it. I have hope it will get better. 👍😀

Great game, less than great controls...
Mon Mar 23 2020 H3L!X_k!L0

I really love this game. It’s very fun, got great graphics, sound design, music, and story. However as other reviewers have stated I am leaving one star off due to the bad controls and confusing camera angles. This game opted to use a different style of controls than the generally accepted left thumb for movement right thumb for camera movement. Instead using anywhere on the screen for movement and two fingers for camera control. This requires you to stop moving and lift your hand off the device to move the camera, which then just snaps back to a confusing angle again when you start moving. This game requires simultaneous camera control because of the nature of the game. If these controls were more intuitive then the game would be a 5 star game no problem.
