A subnautica veteran player’s perspective
Mon Jan 10 2022 mr.ariel37

Amazingly beautiful this game is. Reminds me a lot of subnautica when I started playing this game, though it only focuses on the study of marine animals instead of exploring ocean biomes. I really love this game and learned a lot about marine animals, seriously the best education game I’ve played if you ask me. Really wish this game had a story with plot twists and surprises like that of subnautica’s. I feel like the ending was just a slap in the face, but still very interesting to be apart of. Would’ve been nice for this game to provide vehicle accessibility, being able to navigate the ocean with some type of submarine. Interactions with the player and the animals is a must in this game just for it to look more realistic. For example, we need more of when the player was playing fetch with the dolphins. Being able to pet animals and them reacting to it would be a nice touch. Also being able to be attacked my aggressive animals and fighting them off would add a bit of action. The exploration of hidden ocean biomes with undiscovered marine species would’ve add a bit of mystery to the game and makes you think what really is hiding beneath the ocean. Of course I’m not asking for a subnautica copy, a more interesting story and being able to explore the ocean would’ve been it for this game. Still though, this game is amazing and I definitely recommend to any ocean lovers out there.

It’s good but there’s important glitches.

While I’ve completed the storyline, I also am not able to scan the fish below the whale shark. They show up on the map as unscanned but there’s no dots to scan them, and they won’t scan no matter what angle I try to get. I read somewhere this was fixed, I’m assuming it was for either console or steam but not on iOS. It’s definitely frustrating as a player who wants to finish all the achievements. For that reason I probably won’t play again unless there’s an update fixing that issue, it seems like a pain to scan every fish but those, especially when using the map to find unscanned fish and finding the whale shark so often. The game was really fun but I felt like there were a lot of unanswered questions that left the game feeling unfinished. There were also instances where things were brought up by a character that I know shouldn’t have known certain details because it wasn’t shared with them. There was also conversations that I didn’t realize were arguments and it was confusing when Mirai was so upset. The end of the game felt really rushed. That said I feel like this game really shines with its graphics and ocean exploration and the story is just a bonus to give it more purpose. I’m not sure how accurate the size comparison is of the sea life vs a person but it was really interesting to see. I definitely enjoyed this game in many ways.

Beautiful and haunting

This is the first review I’ve ever written for a game. That enough should tell you about how magnificent this game is. I don’t know what I was expecting when I downloaded it, but it turned out to be one of my favorite mobile games. The sounds the creatures made, the sounds of being underwater, it was all so realistic and beautiful. The visuals were incredible from the very beginning and although I’ve never been super interested in the ocean, I was immediately hooked. I even completed the entire game in one sitting. At first, I was worried the game would be too repetitive with nonstop dives, but the addition of the submarine you can explore, the calls you make to the other characters, even the music selection had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The phone calls and storyline gives so much personality to the characters and the emotional twists made me feel like I was the one in the diving suit. I was so attached to the characters I’m fully invested in André and his turtles, Ren and Nana, and Irina and her research. If there is a sequel in the making, I would play it the instant it’s released. I am amazed at the team who made this game, very well done! I would recommend everyone to play this game, no doubt about it.

Good game ... glitches fixed!

UPDATE: SO before the update came out, I figured out how to go through the game without losing my progress...DON’T STOP! I just pressed through the final stages of the game without quitting... how many games can you say that about? The graphics were great and I did enjoy my time playing. I would recommend this game for all age levels. ESPECIALLY kids! ALSO...after the update, my game completion had saved and I was able to go back and swim throughout all the stages. Definitely updating my Rating! Thank you developers...i know it was tough...and btw.. I read your credits..YOUR TEAM IS HUGE! TY again. Good game for kids to learn about sea life. I personally like the graphics, but there are many glitches (like diver using a tool that isn’t in the IOS (invisible tool), missing fish, etc... guess they forgot to write the graphics software on those). BUT the WORST!! Is the continual failure of the game to save your last completed section. I have SAVED and SAVED, just to shut the game down and reopen to find those saves gone and have to accomplish parts of free game over and over. FRUSTRATING !!!

So many glitches

Great game. Runs very smoothly and the graphics are gorgeous. I personally am not invested in the story at all, I skip through all the dialogue. I wish there was an option to simply explore. Also, the render distance is horrible and anything that isn’t immediately in front of me is a foggy blue color. My biggest problem is that randomly every now and then the entire screen will go blue, except the controls and symbols overlays. So everything that’s animated like the environment and my diver is all blue. It will happen several times while I play and has lasted several minutes before. Closing out and restarting the game doesn’t seem to make it go away. I’ve tried restarting my phone but that also doesn’t help. It doesn’t even happen at certain times in the game when the quality struggles to maintain itself, it’ll happen when I’m swimming out in an empty part of the ocean. It’s ruined the entire experience and made the game completely unplayable. There is no way to change the visual aspects of the game. My Wi-Fi is great and the game acts the same regardless of where I am so this seems very much like a problem with the game itself rather than my phone.

Glitchy

It’s fun when you do not have to do the same dives over and over again. I was playing and it crashed and sent me back a few dives. I tried again and even saved and then it crashed and sent me back to where it did the time before. I tried one more time and again did a manual save (1 dive beyond where it usually sends me) did one more dive and was about to manual save again and the game crashed and sent me back again to where it did before before my manual save. Such a shame I really wanted to know what was going to happen with the noise disrupting the whales. After getting a response from the developers there was an update fixing the bugs I tried it again and it worked so I upped my star rating(1 to 3) I did enjoy the game it was fun to be diving under the water (something I have always wanted to do) but it only got three stars because you can finish the whole game in a day. Wish it had more challenges and stories. A build your adventure type game would be fun. Or maybe more detective work stuff on figuring out who was drilling or science work on the sub to figure out stuff. It’s a good start but I would like to see more

🐋 🌊 New favorite game on Apple Arcade
Tue Jun 09 2020 KiwiTheTuber

I thought this game was beautiful from the start. When I played, it was just so beautiful and eye-opening to the threats we pose to our oceans, and how we can help. I don’t know what else to say- normally for Apple Arcade games, if I write a review, I usually list the pros and cons of the app. I would do it for this, but Beyond Blue is practically flawless, except for the fact it crashed maybe 2 or 3 times while I played it. It is a game that’s really fun, but perhaps could be longer. And I know, you devs worked so hard on this to make it realistic. And I appreciate that. But maybe in the future, I don’t know, add it to where you can still swim around? After you come back in the end to see that the whale is an auntie? Maybe you could scan the new baby and swim around with them. Besides that, LOVE THIS GAME. Would replay it -that’s saying a lot, I normally get bored replaying games- and I just want to say a giant THANK YOU! To all of the marine biologists in our world, helping our oceans. -Kiwi

Control issues. Text too small.

I had this game on my “to buy” list with Steam. Having the game available on Apple Arcade I immediately downloaded and tried it. I had read reviews on Steam that the game was a challenge to play without a thumb-stick controller and I can certainly understand why. However, I recently purchased a Bareback controller, and controlling the diver is still challenging. Had I tried this game on my phone with just my thumbs - would have enraged me. Also, playing on my iPhone 13, the text is so small I can’t read the updates (messages during missions for instance) unless I bring the phone up to my eyes. I had no way to adjust the size of readable text, so if you’re older with bifocals like I am - good luck. Games with divers and submarines, etc. (e.g. Subnautica), are so few and far between, and I’ve loved them since I was a kid. So I would have loved to “love” this game too. Unfortunately, I just don’t see a reason to continue playing and I’m glad I didn’t spend the money for it back before it’s inclusion on Arcade.

Amazing game! Only one big issue...

I started playing this game yesterday, and I got so sucked into it that I just couldn’t bring myself to stop playing until I’d finished it! I love so much about this game: the calming atmosphere; getting to learn about ocean life; the fact that you can wander off to swim with the dolphins, orcas, etc. or just look around and the game won’t yell at you to finish your goal! And unlocking free dive at the end was really the icing on the cake. Unfortunately, I did have a problem with scrolling in the sub. Trying to scroll through the log or the free dive menu in the sub was basically impossible as it would just bounce back to the top almost immediately. Besides that, my only wish for this game is that there was MORE! I wish there were more animals! I wish you could interact with them a bit more instead of just one scene with the dolphins. I feel like this game has so much more potential!

Would be 5 stars, but...

First let me say, I LOVED this game! The gameplay, visuals, learning about the animals, the overall idea of being able to explore the ocean.. it’s great! My only critique is that, for me, I experienced glitching when it came to scrolling. In the submarine, when you go to the center room and click the area that allows you to view all the animals you’ve scanned, it’s almost impossible to scroll to the bottom of the screen. When I attempt to scroll through the list of sea creatures, it blocks me, and keeps auto-scrolling back to the top as I’m attempting to scroll. Almost like I’m playing tug of war and losing. The same is true for the free dive menu that you gain access to after completing the game. I can’t even access all of the areas of the ocean that I’m supposed to be able to free dive in because it won’t allow me to scroll. If this issue wasn’t present, this app would be 5 stars for sure!
