Sit on the throne as a benevolent (or malevolent) medieval monarch of the modern age and swipe your royal fingers either left or right to impose your will upon the kingdom. Survive the seemingly never-ending gauntlet of requests from your advisors, peasants, allies, and enemies while maintaining balance between the influential factions of your kingdom. But beware; each decision you make might have implications and unfortunate consequences down the road that could put your reign and family’s dynasty at risk! Each year of your reign brings another important – seemingly random – request from your unpredictable kingdom as you strive for balance between the church, the people, the army, and the treasury. Prudent decisions and careful planning make for a long reign but unforeseen motivations, surprise events, and poor luck can take down even the most entrenched monarch. Extend your reign as long as possible, forge alliances, make enemies, and find new ways to die as your dynasty marches along through the ages. Some events will span on centuries, with an intrigue involving burning witches, scientific enlightenment, wicked politics and, maybe, the Devil himself.

Awesome unless colorblind
Wed May 05 2021 loxley23

The gameplay is great. The mechanics are great. The characters are fun. It’s a good a game. However, having red-green colorblindness (the most common), I cannot tell the difference between the differently colored circles indicating the effects of my actions before I choose them. I know whom/what it will affect, but I do not know if it will be positive or negative... which is really, really important in this game. Not knowing what I’m doing is really debilitating to gameplay. If a colorblind mode or an option to customize the colors of the positive/negative indicators were implemented, this would absolutely be a 5-star game for me. This game is great, but I can’t quite play it.

Ultimately Frustrating

I got this game because of the high star reviews and I was looking for something new to play. At first it’s addicting as you try to hit different achievements in the game. Once you get those and figure out what you have to do in order to “win” the game, it quickly becomes frustrating. A lot of events that need to happen pop up randomly and you end up going through the same cards repeatedly while waiting for one of these events to happen. You are at the mercy of the game’s randomness in order to win and I found it more frustrating going through the same prompts over and over than satisfying. If you don’t mind a game where it’s a bit of skill and a lot of luck then you may enjoy! But if you prefer games where you are making progress and it depends more on skill then you may get frustrated going through the repetition of this game. Also - the game may have been updated but red/green color blind shouldn’t have a problem! The dot that people reference is not colored unless you get the clarity card. When you have that it turns into up/down arrows so the color doesn’t matter.

The game is fun but random events are annoying

So far I have enjoyed the game but for whatever reason even when I had almost every bar near the top I died as “the last victim of the dungeon murderer” even though 2 rounds before I had reinforced the guard when a body was found in the dungeon this was pretty annoying considering I was on my best run yet and I feel like random events shouldn’t play so big of part in failure other then that the game is really fun.

Colorblind mode NOT needed

I am seeing alot of poor reviews for not having red green colorblindode. This game is not designed with colors and all the cires are the SAME color. If the circles were colored you wouldn't need to follow the story. The circles are different sizes big circle equals big decision positive or negatively little circle small decision positive or negatively. Colorblind mode not required BTW I really enjoy this game and will continue to play

COLORBLIND MODE NOT NEEDED

This game is great and one of my favorites but it gets a lot of bad reviews from red-green colorblind people not liking how the ball indicators for your decisions are colored allegedly red/green but the color is SUPPOSED TO BE THE SAME, even for non colorblind people. Otherwise it would be too easy (or I think that’s what they thought). I love this game and am sad it gets bad reviews from colorblind people

Problem with Iphone 11

Its a decent game all things considered - a good story with a plot even in its simple form. But mostly I keep running into a problem due to the fact I don't have a Home button on my phone. When I swipe up, sometimes this causes a card to be drawing instead of the app to be closed - I wish the swiping was a little more concentrated towards the center of the card - or less sensitive around the bottom of the screen / when swiping up.

Well-written story, poorly executed RNG

Title says it all. Knowing the stradegy of the game can surely help you live a long time, but beating it requires luck. Unfortunate and frustrating. The plot itself is rich and deep, and the game is creative and charming. If the dev’s made a couple essential events inevitable (i.e. late game needed to win), this would be an easy 5/5. Playing for 4 hours only to lose because the game didnt provide you with the option to say “yes” to a certain card (no spoilers, iykyk) is frustrating

Is it a bug or a feature?

“Your fortress is too weak. We should build a new tower,” has replaced all of my cards. I’m sure my kingdom is populated mostly by towers at this point. UPDATE: The update fixed it but I still flinch whenever I see this card. Otherwise a delightful indie style game that’s well suited for mobile play. :)

Awesome! I finished it!

It was a pretty fun game, got very interesting but can be quite tedious at times. It gets compelling and got my boyfriend and I hooked. I love the surprise things and figuring out little hidden ways to hack the game lol. Super cool, everyone should try it, also cool outro screen!

Unplayable if RG color blind
Sat May 07 2022 Regatheos

I’m usually able to make out the two fairly well actually, but I’m on the cusp of actually saying I’m RG colorblind. This game is almost fun only knowing which factions are involved, but not being able to tell if it’s a positive or a negative leaves you going in blind. Either needs a colorblind mode/setting or expanded narrative in the way of advisors etc

Walkthrough

Mastering the Balance

To succeed in Reigns, maintain balance among the four meters: church (✞), people (⚇), army (♖), and treasury ($). Each decision impacts these meters, and if any meter becomes fully empty or full, your reign ends. Pay attention to the dots above cards when swiping—they indicate the magnitude of impact on each meter. For example, aiding a witch might boost the people's meter but lower the church's. To extend your reign, avoid extreme decisions early on and learn from past reigns, as the game logs choices on a linear timeline. To unlock special objectives like tricking the Devil, follow specific card sequences, such as saying 'No' to most requests after receiving the death wish curse until you encounter the dungeon or specific characters.

Tricking the Devil

Breaking the Devil's curse is a key objective. After receiving the death wish curse, avoid saying 'Yes' to most characters to maintain it. Use the dog to enter the dungeon without saying 'Yes,' then navigate carefully to avoid traps or skeletons. The elemental symbols provided by the seer relate to obtaining Excalibur, not the Devil, so focus on dungeon exploration to trigger the Devil's appearance and trick him by answering strategically.

Gameplays

Core Gameplay

Reigns uses a Tinder-inspired swipe mechanic where you swipe left or right to make binary decisions as a king. Each card presents a petition or question from advisors, peasants, or enemies, affecting the kingdom's four aspects: church, people, army, and treasury. The goal is to rule as long as possible by keeping these meters balanced. Decisions are logged, impacting future reigns.

Duels and Mini-Games

Occasionally, gameplay shifts to duels or mini-games. In duels, swipe right to attack or left to dodge/retreat, with a battle arena replacing the meters. Be aggressive but watch for hints of strong enemy attacks. Other mini-games, like navigating dungeons, require careful swiping to avoid traps or enemies, adding variety to the core decision-making.

    Questions And Answers

Here are some possible questions and answers that you might find useful

    1. Q:What do the dots above cards mean when making a decision?

A:The dots indicate the magnitude of impact a decision will have on the four meters (church, people, army, treasury). A large dot means a significant change, while a small dot means a minor change. They don't show whether the change is positive or negative, only the scale.

    2. Q:How can I extend my reign for 100 years?

A:Achieving a 100-year reign requires careful balance of the four meters. Avoid extreme decisions that fully deplete or fill any meter. Follow the doctor's advice to slow aging, but note that dying of old age is common. Learn from past reigns to anticipate card effects and use status effects strategically.
